Transportation Equipment Definitions

LOWBOYS:

A lowboy is a semi-trailer with two drops in deck height: one right after the gooseneck and one right before the wheels. This allows the deck to be extremely low compared with other trailers. It offers the ability to carry legal loads up to 12 ft (3.66 m) tall, which other trailers cannot. Lowboys are used to haul heavy equipment such as bulldozers, industrial equipment etc

FLATBEDS:

A flatbed truck is a type of truck which can be either articulated or rigid. As the name suggests, its bodywork is just an entirely flat, level ‘bed’ with no sides or roof. This allows for quick and easy loading of goods, and consequently they are used to transport heavy loads that are not delicate or vulnerable to rain, and also for abnormal loads that require more space than is available on a closed body.

CONTAINER:

A container is a basic tool, consisting of any device creating a partially or fully enclosed space that can be used to contain, store, and transport objects or materials. In commerce, it includes “any receptacle or enclosure for holding a product used in packaging and shipping.”Things kept inside of a container are protected by being inside of its structure. The term is most frequently applied to devices made from materials that are durable and at least partly rigid.

DUMP TRAILER

A dump truck is a truck used for transporting loose material (such as sand, gravel, or dirt) for construction. A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed, which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic pistons to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be deposited (“dumped”) on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery. In the UK, Australia and India the term applies to off-road construction plant only, and the road vehicle is known as a tipper, tipper lorry.

TRUCK

A truck is a motor vehicle designed to transport cargo. Trucks vary greatly in size, power, and configuration, with the smallest being mechanically similar to an automobile. Commercial trucks can be very large and powerful, and may be configured to mount specialized equipment, such as in the case of fire trucks and concrete mixers and suction excavators.

DOLLIES:

A dolly is an unpowered vehicle design for connection to a tractor unit, truck or prime mover vehicle with strong traction power.

Dolly Classification by Axle Configuration

There are two types of dolly bogie:

FULL TRAILER – 2 axle (4 wheels), with a draw bar which also controls the trailer’s front axle steering. The draw bar does not take load of the full trailer. Heavy full trailer needs to have its own brakes remotely controlled by the prime mover vehicle.

SEMI-TRAILER – 1 axle (2 wheels), without the front axle but have a landing gear. Large semi-trailer of truck size is designed for connection via the fifth wheel on the tractor unit or the semi-trailer truck. Small semi-trailer such as travel trailer and boat trailer is design for connection via a tow hitch of a passenger vehicle. Either the fifth wheel or the tow hitch takes up to half to load of the semi-trailer.

BOMB CARTS – The model M20-45CH is a heavy duty bomb cart designed to withstand severe use commonly associated with port and rail applications. This bomb cart offers a heavy duty suspension specifically for use with solid tires. The M20-45CH is an off road ISO container chassis provides increased efficiency for loading and unloading operations.

GENERATOR SET – A generator set, also known as a genset, is the combination of an electrical generator and an engine mounted together to form a single piece of equipment that produces electrical power. In the generator, referred to as an alternator, the mechanical work of the engine generates electrical power.

YARD MULE – A terminal tractor, known in the United States as a spotting tractor, yard truck, yard goat, yard jockey or mule, is a semi-tractor intended to move semi trailers within a cargo yard, warehouse facility, or intermodal facility, much like a switcher locomotive is used to position railcars.

DRY VAN – A Dry Van semi-trailer is a fully enclosed heavy duty truck trailer. It is the most common type  of truck trailer. Standard varieties include Sheet & Post Construction and Plate Construction. Typical lengths range from 53′ to 28′. Dry vans are also known as box trailers. Vans used for hauling products that require low temperatures are known as Refrigerated Vans or Reefers.

LIFT GATE VANS – used in cases where an unloading dock is not available. They have a platform
at the back of the trailer that raises and lowers freight from the ground to the floor height of the trailer.
